Genuine, unique and authentic. These are just some of the word I can use to describe my stay at the legendary Park Hotel Vitznau, often rated among Europe’s best hotels. I have hardly ever experienced a hotel with such unparalleled service and character. The hotel itself, their staff and overall facilities made my stay unforgettable… Let me tell you why…

The hotel is located within a huge luxurious lakeside villa near the small village of Vitznau. The views of Lake Lucerne took my breath away. Words cannot describe how beautiful the scenery here is. The surrounding Swiss mountains made me feel small and relaxed at the same time. The surrounding views kind of inspired me, I could sit on their terrace all day long.

Right upon arrival, I felt the personal service they provide here at Park Hotel Vitznau. After staying at among the best hotels worldwide, I was impressed with the personal touch and service here. Every guest is treated as a true guest where nothing is asked for too much. Lobby area is bright and I appreciated the luxurious but not too formal atmosphere.

After a very nice check-in, my room keys were handed. For some hotels, check-in is just some administration that has to be done. At Park Hotel Vitznau, they take their time to get to know you and make sure you feel at ease at any moment.

And then it was time to explore our room. At Park Hotel Vitznau there are no regular rooms, just junior suites, suites and residences, each decorated differently with an eye for details. The in room facilities at the rooms are more than what I expect of a luxury five star hotel! For example, the door of our room opened automatically when we approached the room. It is so convenient when you just have the key card in your pocket, you can enter your room without actually using the key. Although I wouldn’t call the room we stayed in a (junior) suite, the room was comfortable and had all the amenities of a five star hotel.

image12 (21)

Large luxurious granite bathroom featured large and amazing jacuzzi bathtub and huge walk-in (rain) shower. As one would expect from an ultra-luxurious hotel like this, plenty of Molton Brown toiletries are provided.

image23 (1) image18 (3)

The use of the minibar is included with a great selection of soft drinks and wine. Other room facilities I liked were the use of an iPad, Blueray player and Nespresso coffee machine.

There’s a lot to do at Park Hotel Vitznau. Be sure to check out their spa facilities with unparallelled lake and mountain views. The indoor and outdoor pools are perfect to relax and enjoy the surrounding areas. Several saunas are available too at no additional charges. The hotel even has its own ice cave with icy walls, very cool and the perfect spot to cool down after a sauna visit!

For ultimate relaxation, guests can book one of their signature La Prairie treatments. I experienced the La Prairie men‘s facial which was outstanding. The facial began with a detailed consultation of my skin. This facial is specifically tailored to clean and relax the skin. It was also very relaxing as the therapist massaged my legs and arm while I had a facial mask. The therapist and Spa Manager Meryem was a true professional. At the end, she gave me advice and tips to achieve the best possible results.

The two restaurants at the Park Hotel Vitznau constitute an undeniable lure to all food lovers. Both restaurants have Michelin stars. Restaurant Focus has two Michelin stars and offers a modern Swiss cuisine. Their chef, Nenad Mlinarevic, was named chef of the year by Gault & Millau in 2016! Their other restaurant, PRISMA, has one Michelin star and an outstanding 16/20 score by Gault & Millau. This is where I had dinner and can’t say enough good things about this restaurant.

The culinary journey I made here was flawless. Every bite of every course was an adventure of flavors and we wanted more of everything! The food was beautifully presented and tasted even better.  From the crispy pork belly with scallop, homemade kimchi and radish to the apricotsorbet with yoghurt, almond and lime, every single dish was divine!

The timing between the courses was perfectly measured which made me feel that we had not eaten that much. The service was very kind, professional and attentive.

After a wonderful night (the beds are amazing!) we were ready for breakfast. Honestly, it was the best breakfast I have ever experienced at any hotel. There’s a small buffet with a great selection of fresh fruit, pastries, etc. There’s even a small kids buffet with candies (and even Kinder chocolate eggs…). The all included à la carte options are endless and there’s something for everyone including some delicious egg dishes and pancakes. Some highlights for me were the caviar specialties slices of Grand Cru ham and truffle brie. They also serve some more healthy options such as the vegan quinoa-chia pudding with raisons or the avocado with herbal salad, cottage cheese and pumpernickel. I loved the fresh juices, especially the ‘Vital Boost’ with orange, apple, ginger and beetroot.

image21 (3)

I should also highlight the hotel’s wine collection! They have around 35,000 bottles of wine spread over 6 wine cellars. Wine tasting is possible… very impressive collection, unseen!

Incredible how they were able to exceed my expectations at Park Hotel Vitznau. It’s all about the small things to life by taking the personal service to heart, making my stay here memorable, unique and truly authentic!

Named as the hotel of the year 2017 by Gault Millau, the renowned Chedi Andermatt is an ultra-luxurious five star located near Andermatt, a quiet cozy Swiss mountain village. Chic, authentic and exclusive … this is a real paradise for seekers of rest and relaxation both in winter and summer. As part of the Leading hotels of the world, the Chedi Andermatt offers only the best of the best! I was very impressed with my stay, let me tell you why…

The lobby made a perfect first impression, the overall design is very elegant and is a beautiful combination of cozy mountain design and Asian touches. Truly impressive.

Upon arrival, I was welcomed by the most friendly front desk staff. They know how to welcome their guests in the most accommodating way! After some useful information about the hotel and its facilities, I was totally ready to explore their beautiful rooms.

The rooms at the Chedi Andermatt artfully mix the Modern Asian style with contemporary design. They embody a sense of warmth and character often lacking in other hotels. The very large and luxurious deluxe suite I stayed in had wooden walls with subtle lighting, a built-in fireplace, rich dark wood furnishings, granite-top vanities and bedside tables. The beds feature pillow top mattresses with leather headboards and fluffy comforters. Lights, doors, music and the fire place are controlled by an in-room iPad. The iPad is user friendly so no complicated maneuvers to control the lights etc. 🙂 I should also mention the mini bar with complimentary soft drinks and the Bose surround system which was a nice touch!

image4 (63)
image3 (68)

The bathrooms feature convenient touches such as lots of storage cubicles and chrome fixtures. The free standing bathtub was gorgeous and relaxing after a day in the mountains. Separate toilet and rain shower were great. Premium Acqua di Parma toiletries are provided in every room.

image2 (79)

I was blown away with the spa area here… On 2,400 square metres, the place is huge and ultra luxurious appointed! I truly was impressed with this peace of heaven. There are two pools here to enjoy, one outdoor and one indoor pool. Both are large and in an unique setting. I enjoyed several types of saunas and a steam room as well as some very cozy relaxing areas. The whole spa area is just gorgeous and very exclusive. I could easily spend a full day here. Several body treatments are provided for guests to enjoy an indulgent, relaxing interlude after a day of sightseeing and walking outdoors.

There are two main restaurants at the Chedi Andermatt, a Japanese Restaurant and ‘The Restaurant’.  The Japanese restaurant with executive chef Dietmar Sawyere offers authentic Japanese fine dining dishes and is specialized in sushi. It has the most extensive sake selection in Switzerland and was awarded 16 GaultMillau points. Very impressive. Decoration is Asian design and reminded me of an exclusive fine dining restaurant in the middle of Hong Kong. Do note that this restaurant is only open during the winter season.

The Restaurant is a more international cuisine restaurant with 15 GaultMillau points. The luxurious cozy mountain style pleased me. I had dinner here and was pretty impressed with the food and overall service. The friendly and courteous staff made us feel welcome and were very knowledgeable about the menu and wines. We started with their crisp Chinese Dim Sum, followed by a delicious prawn Won Ton Noodle soup. The stir-fried black pepper beef fillet with roasted garlic, peppers and shallots as a main course was excellent and to end we enjoyed the coconut panna cotta with mango, lychee and ginger granita… Loved it!

Every morning, they serve The Chedi Grand Breakfast Buffet and ‘grand’ it was! Several local specialties such as the Swiss cheeses, salami, etc. it is all there. The buffet is rich and plentiful and definitely beats all superlatives. Do not forget to visit their cheese tower!

Words cannot describe how beautiful this hotel is. I loved the Chedi’s contemporary spirit and combination of elegance with understated luxury. No wonder this hotel is rated among the best hotels in Switzerland! Highly recommended!

Lausanne Palace is a five star luxury palace right in the center of Lausanne, making part of the Leading hotels of the world. Location is excellent, the palace is located near the Esplanade of Montbenon and the views of Lake Geneva are just gorgeous! The hotel was built in 1915 and is representing an important part of the historical heritage of Lausanne.

When I entered Lausanne Palace I immediately knew that this would be a great stay. The luxurious lobby definitely is an eye-catcher with its beautiful furniture and relax atmosphere. The tree makes it even more special. Loved it!

Let’s talk about rooms… Lausanne Palace has 138 rooms which are all decorated in a very stylish way.  The suite I stayed in was absolutely stunning and the view over Lake Geneva was just unbelievable. The suite had upscale furniture and a very comfortable living area and separate sleeping area with the most comfortable bed. A nice detail: every room comes with a complimentary minibar… Yep, that’s right, drinks in the minibar are included in the rate. The décor was contemporary and very stylish. Although the hotel has its age, the suite and rooms are recently renovated and all offer five star facilities! My favorite place in the suite definitely was the small balcony with the gorgeous panoramic views! I do recommend to book a room with a lake view, you won’t be sorry!

Two bathrooms in the suite! One with double sink and bathtub, the other one with walk-in shower. Penhaligon’s toiletries are a plus! The suite had two toilets. Everything in the room was very well maintained.

image2 (79) image3 (68)

Lausanne Palace offer a lot of facilities to their guests. The spa center is a must visit when you are staying here. The relaxing treatments and facilities of the CBE Wellness area are designed to make you feel relaxed and reborn. Each morning, I started my day with a nice swim in the indoor pool. After that I relaxed in the jacuzzi before I enjoyed my breakfast. Other facilities are the separate male/female Finnish sauna, Moroccan hammam for men and Rhassoul for women. The fitness area is up to date with great furniture and Pilates studio. For total relaxation after the work-out, the Silent Duvet Room is a treat! Several body treatments and facials are offered as well as private spa suites. I loved the semi outdoor terrace with plenty of loungers. It was sunny when I was in Lausanne and it was divine to rest here and reading a good book.

There are several restaurants at Lausanne Palace. La Table d’Edgard is their signature restaurant with one Michelin star and 18 points by the Gault Millau guide.

The hotel also offers more casual – but still fine dining – options. Côté Jardin for example is a very nice restaurant with a Mediterranean cuisine. We had dinner here and enjoyed it very much. Staff was excellent and sommelier was very knowledgeable about the wines. The food was very good. The antipasti buffet prepared by Chef Edgard Bovier as a starterwas a great choice! From the buffalo mozzarella to the tasty selections of meat and fish, every dish was prepared in an excellent way. The grilled sea bass with artichokes and an olive tapenade was one the best I have ever had! And at the end, we couldn’t resist the dessert buffet with pastries, fruit, cheese, etc. choices are endless! A must try is their merengue with cream… As the weather was nice, we had dinner outside with a view of the lake. It made our evening even more pleasant. The service here was out of this world, very nice, easy going and certainly not snobby or anything.

If you are into sushi, the Palace Sushi Zen is the place to be. For more local dishes, the Brasserie du Grand Chêne is a great alternative. Of course, the hotel has several outdoor terraces where guests can enjoy their dishes while enjoying the sun and outdoor views.

Breakfast was outstanding! A nice buffet is offered with a lot of choices to start your day healthy. My favorite drink was the smoothie with ginger and freshly squeezed orange juice. So refreshing and healthy at the same time. Loved the fact that we were able to sit outside.

What a nice hotel to stay at in Lausanne. This is a high class hotel with charm and history. I loved the overall service level and many facilities. No wonder this hotel is rated among the best hotels in this town! It truly is a palace! Thumbs up, Lausanne Palace!

Located at 2222 metres above sea level, the Riffelalp resort is a five star hotel making part of the Leading hotels of the world. The views from the hotel to the surrounding mountains and the majestic Matterhorn took my breath away!

The Riffelalp Resort truly is an exclusive ‘resort’ with a tennis court, a bowling lane, outdoor playgrounds, etc. Last year, they totally renovated the hotel and today it still is a five star superior hotel with Europe’s highest wellness center. The hotel refitted in strict accordance with their prestigious past and their many individual features, each with its own style and character.

We were warmly welcomed by the staff. I noticed that everybody seemed to be happy to be there and that they only want to offer the best to their guests. That does make a difference. I must say I loved their mountain style decoration througout the entire hotel!

image15 (12) FullSizeRender

Each room at Riffelalp is luxuriously appointed and distinctive and individually designed. The charm and magic of the mountains was noticeable throughout the room we stayed in. They used a lot of wood and high quality materials to decorate their rooms which make them really cozy and comfortable. You can tell that the hotel has been renovated recently as the room looked pretty new. I loved the private panoramic terrace with Matterhorn views.

image6 (56)
image10 (46)

Bathroom was spacious with separate bathtub and walk-in rain shower. There was a separate toilet, always a bonus! Again, the bathroom looked brand new. I loved the modern design! Premium l’Occitane toiletries were the best!

14 13

Getting bored at the Riffelalp resort is impossible! Since this hotel is located in such an amazing area, they offer a lot of outdoor activities. We climbed the Breithorn for example with their amazing guide, Yann. But even if you are not into hiking, skiing, etc. guests can enjoy billiard, bowling or just experience some me-time at their amazing wellness center. Their outdoor pool with scenic views is amazing!

12

Riffelalp has one of the highest spa centers in Europe! Trust me, spa facilities in such a mountain environment is pure indulgence. The hotel offers several saunas, whirlpools, an indoor and an amazing outdoor pool with gorgeous Matterhorn views as mentioned before. I must admit that those pool views are among the best I have ever seen! Truly unique! The Chriiter cave with its saline baths and waterfalls is a must visit! I got to experience the Lomi Lomu Nui treatment which is an unusual Hawaiien massage with ancient roots and traditions. The therapist used a lot of oil and made me feel relaxed in just seconds. This 85’ treatment definitely is a must try when you are experiencing stress and want some me-time.

image4 (63)
image7 (56)

There are three restaurants at the Riffelalp Resort: Ristorante Al Bosco, Restaurant Alexandre and Restaurant Walliserkeller which is open during the winter season only. I would classify the main restaurant Alexandre as their signature restaurant offering an international cuisine. The thing I liked about Ristorante Al Bosco – besides their outstanding menu – is the large outdoor terrace with panoramic views. We had dinner at Al Bosco and started with a delicious beef filet carpaccio. The carpaccio was served as it should be with delicious parmesan cheese and garden rocket. The Grilled rib-eye-steak with café de Paris butter was outstanding and the warm apple strudel with vanilla sauce as dessert was to die for!

Ultima Gstaad is one of a kind! Located in Gstaad, a glamorous Swiss Alpine village, this ultra luxurious five star boutique hotel impressed me with their amazingly designed suites and super high service level!

From the outside, Ultima Gstaad looks like a chalet style hotel and as soon as you enter, you will immediately discover the luxurious atmosphere of this sumptuous chalet. The overall decoration and the interior layout have been designed in order to preserve the character of a chalet and at the same time add a more contemporary and trendy feel.

Front desk staff was very accommodating and professional making us feel at home right away. What a great start at this amazing hotel… With only 11 suites and 6 residences, Ultima Gstaad is able to provide a very personal service. Their welcome cocktail, a mojito with ginger ale blew me away! Loved every sip!

image1 (81)

Ultima Gstaad is an all-suite hotel… no regular rooms here. All are ultra luxuriously decorated with all the comfort of a superior 5-star establishment and will meet even the highest standards of comfort.

The three bedroom suite I stayed in had a contemporary cozy decoration and top quality bedding. It definitely was one of the nicest mountain suites I have ever seen. It is all about the details here… the wooden floors and ceilings, the fire place, the candles, amazing art work and gorgeous chandeliers… I just couldn’t believe my eyes! At 222 square metres, the suite was huge! 4 televisions, build in surrounding sound systems, etc. it is all there and as mentioned before, every single item at the Ultima Gstaad is of a superior quality.

Every suite comes with a complimentary mini bar stocked with soft drinks, wine and a bottle of Bollinger. HD television with complimentary on demand movies and build-in speakers are a nice touch!

The 3 marble bathrooms feature nice bathtubs and very large walk-in rain showers. Plenty premium Hermès toiletries are provided, even eau de cologne which I loved very much!

The spa area at Ultima Gstaad is one of the highlights at the hotel. The place is just beautiful … For such a small boutique hotel, I was surprised with the size of the indoor 15-metre pool. There are two large hot tubs, one indoor and one outdoor. A steam room and sauna are available too. It was great to relax here and I can imagine that especially during the winter season that this is the perfect place to unwind after a day at the ski slopes. One downside is that the spa only opens at 9:00AM so I couldn’t swim which I usually do before breakfast.

Villa Magna is one of the most luxurious five star hotels in Madrid or let’s even say Spain! I just had to explore and experience this hotel myself and was blown away with this property… As the hotel is part of the Leading Hotels of the World, my expectations were high and didn’t disappoint. All I can say that it definitely deserves its good reputation!

Location is excellent, right near the center of Madrid. The hotel is located in Salamanca, the Madrid district known for its high end boutiques and trendy restaurants. Madrid’s Big Three Art museum, the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza are reachable in walking distance. We walked to the old city center in just 20 minutes.

2

As soon as you enter Villa Magna, you enter a world full of luxury. The lobby area is just stunning and recently renovated. I immediately noticed the beautiful art pieces and cozy lounges. The place is dotted with plush sofas and features a champagne bar with garden facing picture windows. I could spend hours here reading a good book!

9

With only 150 rooms and suites, Villa Manga is not a very large hotel which is why they could offer a very high service level. I’ve found the service to be very personal and professional. They even remembered my name. Front desk staff was very professional and made me feel at home right upon arrival. My rooms keys were handed in just a matter of seconds and everything I needed to know about the hotel was told in a very kind way. What a great start!

IMG_6112

There are several types of rooms at Villa Magna and each room is luxuriously appointed with all the amenities and facilities one could wish for. I stayed in a Grand Prestige Room and what a prestigious room it was… With a size of 50m², I had plenty of space… right in the center of Madrid! The room was huge and the décor was refined. Our room (I must say ‘suite’) was furnished in mahogany wood. I still had some work to do and was very pleased with the spacious work desk.

4
7

I loved the walk-in closet with dressing area and marble bathroom with bathtub and separate walk-in rain shower. Luxury toiletries by Asprey London were a bonus! I can tell you, they smell like heaven!

5 6

Other standard amenities in each room I liked are the Nespresso coffee machine, the pillow menu and an amazing Dream Mirror 37’’ television. The room almost felt like an oversized luxurious boutique room! Loved it!

Villa Manga has three restaurants: The Lounge, which is more for casual dining where snacks, lunch dishes and cocktails are offered. The menu is pretty varied and I can recommend the creative tapas … they looked absolutely delicious! The Lounge is located in Villa Magna’s stunning lobby area. For a more formal dinner, Restaurant Villa Magna is the place to be! With Amalio Prados as executive chef, this restaurant offers fine dining options in a unique setting. If the weather permits, guests can dine on the terrace. And last (but not least!), their Tse Yand Restaurant offers a Cantonese cuisine. In the menu you will find traditional dishes as well as very sophisticated proposals, such as steam jasmine rice with lotus leafs and the most exquisite dim sums of the city.

13
22

We had dinner at Restaurant Villa Magna and enjoyed every single bite of our excellent menu. The chef prepared some of his signatures dishes in tapas portions. We started with the scarlet prawns croquettes and a Granny Smith apple gel, followed by the grilled octopus with Creole chilindron. As a main course, we tried the grilled sea bass with sautéed vegetables and a surf and turf creamy sauce. A must try for dessert are the red berries with gratinated sabayon and hazelnut crumble… So delicious!

The hotel offers luxurious spa facilities. I thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing full body treatment during my stay at Villa Manga. Club Wellness by Kiara Kare has a ‘back to basics’ concept with simple and authentic beauty and wellness experiences. Their focus is on true well-being and a healthy life style. I love the fact that they care about the environment as they use 100% ecological and earth-friendly oils and cosmetics products. My therapist did an outstanding job! She was very professional and knowledgeable about the body and the products she used. I totally enjoyed my 60 minute anti-stress relaxing massage with its soft and relaxing with wave-like and indulging maneuvres. She used organic almond oil. Loved every second of this treatment and felt reborn afterwards!

11

The next day, we had breakfast at Restaurant Villa Magna and again, the food and service were five stars all the way! As it wasn’t too hot in the morning, we enjoyed breakfast outside on the peaceful terrace. There’s a buffet with fresh ingredients and a lot of fresh fruit. There’s also a varied à la carte menu with a lot of choice for prepared eggs, etc.

20

They also have several high tech meeting and board rooms for any events. Also, for exclusive weddings, this definitely is the place to be!

24

Villa Magna is a top notch five star hotel, this hotel is an example for many other hotels and offers a very high level of service. Incredible how the manage to be that personal in a very professional way. Hardly ever experienced and oh so nice to notice! I would return in a heartbeat to this jewel! Highly recommended!

Hotel Ritz Madrid is a very classy five star hotel in the center of Madrid built in 1910 and managed by Mandarin Oriental. Although the hotel will undergo some renovation in the near future, the hotel’s stunning façade is listed as a national monument. The hotel is located on a very interesting spot near the center of Madrid. The Museo del Prado is only a few steps away and the old city center is just a 20 minute walk.

Entering the Ritz is entering a world of refined service and elegance. The gorgeous lobby took my breath away, it is just mind blowing with cosy seating areas in a very elegant atmosphere.

All 162 rooms and suites at Ritz Madrid are luxuriously appointed with all the five star amenities one could wish for. Marble bathrooms feature bathtub and shower. Oh, and I should highlight the Loewe toiletries! 🙂

14

Ritz Madrid offers several dining options such as the Goya Restaurant, the Hall and the Ritz Garden. We thoroughly enjoyed a tapas experience in their beautiful garden. It almost felt like a magical fairytale garden to me as there are several light effects at night to make the fountains look even better. I also loved the live piano music while we enjoyed the most delicious tapas. This definitely is the perfect place for a romantic evening!

IMG_6398

The food was outstanding… and I can recommend their tapas tasting menu, they offer only the best of the best! We started with some crusty bread with a freshly prepared tomato tapenade and some yummie Iberian ham. A must-try is the Cherries Gazpachuelo Soup, normally i’m not really a fan of cold soups, but i LOVED this one and could eat it every day! The seafood Russian quinoa Salad that followed was refreshing and tasty. They love croquettes in Spain and you will find some on every menu in Madrid. At the Ritz, we tried three different kinds: Iberian ham, mushroom and chicken (with curry and leek) croquettes together with the best patatas bravas! Each of them were delicious! A perfect dinner always end with a great dessert. The merengue and ice cream made me feel like I was heaven!

Rated as one the best five stars in Madrid, Hotel Orfila has a very good reputation and is part of Relais & Chateaux. I was very pleased to stay here and I can definitely confirm that this hotel is one of a kind! Relais & Chateaux has always been synonymous with elegance and impeccable service, and this hotel is no exception.

You can’t beat the location, the hotel is located in the middle of it all! Museo del Prado is just minutes away as well as the Garden of Eathly Delights. The shopping district and several restaurants are nearby the hotel too. Although you are in the center of Madrid, I did not had that feeling while staying at the hotel as it is located in a quiet and peaceful area.

1

Hotel Orfila is a small palace built in 1886, the hotel has a great history! If almost feels like a museum with stunning art works and paintings all over the place. The beautiful garden courtyard and adjoining patio are a bonus! The weather was beautiful while I was in Madrid and spending some time in their garden made me feel so relaxed! That is right, Hotel Orfila has an amazing terrace and small garden where drinks and light tapas are served offering stunning views over the surrounding areas.

14
15

Maybe the best thing about Hotel Orfila is the staff. They are so kind and professional. Nothing really is asked for too much! They really go out of their way to serve the guests and that’s why I believe Hotel Orfila is rated among the best hotels in town.

There are only 32 rooms which is why every guest is treated as a true guest and not just a number. As you would expect, rooms are decorated in a classic way and feature period furniture and marble bathrooms each equipped with a jacuzzi tub! We stayed in one of their largest suites and were blown away when we entered the suite! They did an amazing job by decorating this suite in a very classy and elegant way! The separate living area had the most comfortable couch and cosy arm chairs. The king sized bed was extremely comfortable.

The oversized bathroom had a fancy rain shower with massage jets. I appreciated the large Jacuzzi, what a great way to relax and unwind after a busy day in the city!

Behind every corner, a new surprise can be found such as the superb trompe l’oeil effects and pieces of art. Walking through the hotel made me feel like I was staying in a fancy boutique hotel!

I enjoyed the five star service here! For example, complimentary weekday newspapers and turn down service are provided daily. The beds are dressed in premium bedding lines and 24 hours room service is available too. Even valet parking is included in their rates. For some reason, I loved their complimentary mineral water bottles, maybe it’s the design and color of the bottle itself? I don’t know, but I just loved it 🙂

After a wonderful night in our fancy suite, we were ready for breakfast! Breakfast is served in their restaurant with the adjoining terrace. It was one of the better breakfast buffets I have experienced with fresh and healthy options as well as homemade pastries. Staff really went out of their way to made us feel relaxed.

Hotel Orfila is a top notch five star Relais & Chateaux hotel, it is an ideal place from which to explore Madrid and its fantastic atmosphere. It is a romantic hotel with charm and personality. Can’t say enough good things about this place! Experience it yourself!

Hilton Madrid is a five star hotel located near the airport of Madrid. It is only a 10 minute drive to reach at all the terminals which makes this hotel ideal if you need to catch an early flight the next day or if you arrive pretty late in the evening.

As you can expect of a Hilton hotel, Hilton Madrid offers comfortable rooms and a good service. For example, a complimentary shuttle service from/to the airport is offered to all guests. It runs every 20 minutes. Four times a day, a shuttle will even bring you to the center of Madrid, dropping you off at Puerta de Alcalá from where you can easily explore Madrid!

Although the building itself has been built years ago, the hotel from the inside looks pretty modern. I liked the bright atrium and overall atmosphere. Check-in staff was efficient and provided us with all the information we needed to know.

The rooms at Hilton Madrid are nicely appointed featuring either a king sized bed or twin beds. Our spacious room had a comfortable lounge chair and a nice desk. The semi-open bathroom featured bathtub and separate shower and standard Hilton toiletries.

Hilton Madrid offers an outdoor pool which can be covered if needed and a full sized fitness area. It is great to be able to use the pool after a flight.

Downstairs, there’s a restaurant and bar where guests can either enjoy a full menu or a small light snack and drink. Staff was very attended and were pleased to serve us in a very kind way. We only had a drink so I cannot comment on food.

Breakfast is served here too consisting of a good buffet with several cheeses and ham. If you need to catch a plane very early in the morning, a small buffet with coffee, tea and some pastries and croissants is offered… Very nice touch!

Hilton Madrid is one of the better airport hotels near the airport of Madrid. I would recommend this hotel is you need to catch a plane early in the morning as the shuttle service is very convenient. Even for a stopover in Madrid, this hotel is a good choice as it offers a shuttle service to the city center. Make sure to reserve your spot though, as places are limited! Very pleased with my stay!

Cruise review: M.S. Koningsdam

Cruiseline
: Holland America Line
Ship: M.S. Koningsdam
Itinerary: Voyage to the Midnight Sun – Norway

As some of you already know, I’m a huge fan of cruises. While I traveled with several cruise lines already, I choose to sail with Holland America Line this summer and was very excited to explore their newest ship, the ms Koningsdam. Koning means king in Dutch and it truly deserve its name as it is a stunning ship with the latest technology features. We traveled to the North Cape on a 14 day cruise to the Midnight Sun. Let me first share some facts about the cruiseline.

Holland America Line has several ships, from mid-sized ships to large. They are active in the cruise industry for some time which I could experience myself during the cruise I did. They know how to treat their guests in the most comfortable and convenient way.

The ms Koningsdam is a large ship, let me share some facts:

  • Ship’s registry: The Netherlands
  • Guest capacity: 2,650 guests
  • Gross Tonnage: 99,500 grt.
  • Length: 975 ft
  • Beam: 114,8 fr
  • Dedicated: May 2016 by Queen Maxima of the Netherlands

All public areas on Koningsdam are decorated in a very stylish way! The pictures speak for themselves…

During our cruise, we stayed in one of their verandah cabins and were very pleased with our cabin. Most people think that cabins on a ship are tiny and you don’t have any space at all to move around. Nowadays cabins are five star hotel rooms with all the amenities one could wish for. There are several cabin categories on the ms Koningsdam, from interior cabins to the Pinnacle Suites. Our cabin had the most comfortable king sized bed, a small couch to relax and watching the sea pass by and a comfortable working/vanity desk.

As mentioned before, their signature Mariner’s Dream beds are great and feature finely woven cotton lines. Every stateroom has comfortable bathrobes and mini fridge. I also loved the bedside USB ports, very convenient!

Bathrooms all amazing! I must admit I fell in love with their shower, the bathroom had the best shower on sea I ever had… it is a full sized shower with a premium massage showerhead, plenty of room to move and no annoying curtains here that sticks to the body.

The five star services include complimentary shoe shine service, complimentary room service and the room will be serviced several times a day, including turn down service at night. They also refill the ice bucket each night and I requested daily fresh fruit in my room too at no additional charges.

I should also mention that I appreciated the large HD television with (complimentary!) on demand movies. It is great to watch a movie on a sea day or before going to sleep. It is an interactive television where you can follow your itinerary, consult today’s menu, etc. Absolutely loved it!

The food at ms Koningsdam truly is amazing. There are several restaurants to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each guest is traveling here on full board basis and I would rate their dining options each with five stars. Let’s start for breakfast. We opted to enjoy a delicious breakfast at the main dining room as we liked to be served since we are on holiday! The breakfast menu is amazing, unbelievable how many things you can choose from! I ordered the Breakfast Parfait each day which is Greek vanilla yoghurt, fresh berries and crunchy granola. Several “Greenhouse Spa” selections are available as well such as the Swiss Style Muesli which contains low far yoghurt, fresh fruit, toasted hazelnuts, oatmeal and honey. Do not forget to try the Swedisch pancakes with a mixed berry compote and whipped butter.

I loved the fact that you can choose if you want to share a table. Sometimes we opted to enjoy breakfast with just the two of us and sometimes we preferred to chat with others. When we had booked an excursion, we opted to have breakfast at Lido. Lido is their buffet style restaurant and although I usually am not a huge fan of buffets, I must admit that the buffet on ms Koningsdam offers high quality food. Guests cannot touch any food as all food stations are staffed and they are most happy to hand you the food you want, very hygienic! Even the Grand Dutch Café offers several typical Dutch breakfast options. The Grand Dutch Café seemed one of the most popular dining outlet as it is opened all day long. I loved their typical Dutch appetizers such as “bitterballen” and cheese souffles. The coffees are delicious here too! Definitely check them out when you’re sailing on ms Koningsdam!

The Main Dining room at ms Koningsdam is just gorgeous! It is a very stylish restaurant with bright colors and the most comfortable furniture. We had so much fun here during our cruise and as mentioned before, the food was just out of this world. It was pretty difficult to pick a dish as each was nicely prepared and oh so yummie. They offer several Holland America Line’s signature dishes each night such as the French onion soup, classic Caesar Salad and for the mains the broiled New York Strip Loin or the delicious oven-roasted chicken. Let me share some pictures with you of dishes I really liked.

Do note that ms Koningsdam has several fine dining restaurants on board as well. For a reasonable additional charge, you could have lunch or dinner at the Pinnacle grill for example, their steak and seafood restaurant. For lunch, you’ll pay $10 and for dinner $35 per person. I must say the place is stylish and the food is outstanding. It does represent the pinnacle of exceptional dining. Their menu is varied, innovative and creative. They use the freshest ingredients from the Pacific Northwest, featuring Double R Ranch Beef and premium seafood that delight the palate. Definitely worth the extra small surcharge.

image18 (5)

Canaletto is another specialty restaurant with an Italian cuisine. It is located next to the Lido buffet restaurant. For only $15 per person you can enjoy an intimate Italian dinner.

Sel de Mer is probably one of the best places to enjoy a delicious dinner on the ms Koningsdam. It is an intimate sea food brasserie offering a contemporary twist on timeless French classics. I’ve found out that the ms Koningsdam’s chefs even go ashore themselves whenever possible and bring back the catch of the day as a daily special for the evening’s menu. How cool is that?

image17 (8)

Other specialty restaurants on board are the Tamarind restaurant with a Pan-Asian cuisine and the Culinary Arts Center where fresh, artisanal dishes are prepared each night for an amazing dinner.

More casual dining outlets I really liked were the Dive-In and New York Pizza & Deli. Dive-In is Holland America’s signature burger restaurant. I loved the grilled chicken breast sandwich and cheesy fries! New York Pizza & Deli serves freshly prepared salads and personal pan pizzas made with a thin crust and delicious sauce. Both restaurants are included in the rate.

Getting bored on ms Koningsdam is impossible. Each day there’s an entertainment program with several activities I enjoyed very much! Every day, our Excursion Guide, Karlijn, shared her insight for that day’s port of call. Excursions can be booked at Journeys Ashore on Deck 1, Holland America Line offers several excursions at each port. I also attended several interesting spa seminars on board such as acupuncture and the Medi Spa Q&A. The spa area is gorgeous and has a fancy and very large jacuzzi. There are several pool areas and they can cover the main pool which is great as we were sailing in Norway and the weather wasn’t always great.

For people into sport, there’s a full sized fitness center and basketball court.

Also music and show lovers will appreciate the ms Koningsdam as there are performances each night. If you are into classical music, you will appreciate Lincoln Center Stage where live music is performed by amazing musicians. B.B. King’s All-stars is the perfect spot for a great night out, I would call the B.B. King’s Blues Club as the main dancing area on the ms Koningsdam. It’s a great place to hang out, have a drink and dance all night long.

image19 (4)

There are many bars at the Koningsdam. The Crow’s Nest was definitely my favorite place to hang out! This is the perfect spot to enjoy the sea as this cool bar offers amazing panoramic views.

World Stage is their main stage for the evening shows. I was very impressed with the stage and surrounding LED screens, they are amazing and very impressive! Each night there’s another show. We thoroughly enjoyed their production shows with the on board dancers and singers. Holland America Line has a co-operation with BBC. One of the best shows was the Planet Earth show with live music. That truly was amazing. Also, several artists are on board and perform.

If you are into gambling, a casino is also available! From slot machines to black jack tables, it’s all there… You will definitely have a great night’s out the latest in a sophisticated gaming area. Notes is a bar which is located near the casino which is the perfect place for whiskey tasting!

Using Navigator is another great feature of Holland America Line. It is their free web application on which you can plan your itinerary, see what is happening on board, make reservations for shore excursions and dining and review your account information.

The itinerary was just fabulous, we traveled to the North Cape. Let me share some pictures of the most amazing places we visited during our Voyage to the Midnight Sun!
